adding user-defined data type to existing publication/subscription

Hello, I am not a sql server programmer.
I have a database which already has a publication set up, which sends a
bunch of tables to subscribers. Everything was okay, but now I need to
publish two more tables. These tables contain columns which are user
defined types, which means my subscribers do not have them defined on
their side.
When I try to start synchronizing I get an error: Column or parameter
#1: Cannot find data type u_Blah. (error number 2715)
which is I guess, fair enough since the tables is trying to call
something that doesn't exist for the subscribers yet. If I understand
MSDN correctly (I tried reading so many articles...) in the Publication
--> Properties --> Articles tab; then, when I go into the properties
of the new articles, I can specify "Convert User Defined To base data
types", and then the subscribers will be able to pick up the user
defined types just fine. However (PLEASE tell me I understood this
wrong) that only works when publication is being set up the very first
time. That, in my situation, because I'm only adding articles, I cannot
do that.
The solution in MSDN seems to be to "manually copy the type (and the
associated assembly for a user-defined type) to each subscriber".
(msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms152559.aspx) I have no idea what
this means. Can anyone shed some light on what must be done now?
Thank you
-Dorothy
This is definable at the article level, and if you select to use the base
types for your new articles, there should be no requirement to have them
exist on the subscriber. If you want to continue to use user-defined data
types, you can create a script to add them (using sp_addtype and operating
in the correct database ie a 'USE' statement at the top) and then run this
script on the subscriber. How to do this? There are several options:
(a) manually open up Query Analyser and connect to the subscriber and then
run there
(b) use a pre-snapshot script on the publication - not for you as you are
just adding articles to an initialized publication
(c) use sp_addscriptexec, which will run the script on the subscriber the
next time it synchronizes
Cheers,
Paul Ibison SQL Server MVP, www.replicationanswers.com .
|||Just to clarify the current situation:
1) SQL2005 snapshot processing can handle column dependencies on
user-defined data types (both TSQL and CLR) by including the necessary
type\assembly definitions as part of the snapshot. There should be no need
to manually create the necessary types at the subscriber ahead of time using
a pre-snapshot script anymore as folks typically need to do on SQL2000.
2) SQL2005 DDL replication currently lacks capability to figure out new data
type dependencies introduced by a DDL action (such as adding a new column
depending on a UDT that doesn't exist at the subscriber as you attempted
below) As such, you would need to implement some other mechanisms
(sp_addexecscript being one) to bring the necessary data type (+assembly)
definition over to the subscriber before the DDL action is replicated.

Adding trigger or Check contraint

We are using SQL 2K with sp4 and push subscription.
If I add a trigger or a Check contraint (or other contraints) for a column
in a table that is already published in the publishing database, do or don't
I need to do anything in the subscriber database? Please explain the
consequence if I do or don't do anything in the subscriber database.
Wing
That depends on what you are trying to do. If you don't use the check
constraint and there could be DML occurring on the subscriber this check
constraint will not be enforced as it is not there.
Regarding the trigger. Do you need it fired on the subscriber as well? If
the trigger cause DML on tables which are also being replication the DML
will be replicated there as well. If not, you might want to put and fire the
trigger on the subscriber as long as all objects are there as well and the
required data is.

|||Ok, I guess I have two scenerios.
1 Say I don't need any check contraints or triggers happening on the
subscriber server, does it mean I don't need to do anything to the subscriber
table(s). Even thought the table between the publisher and subscriber is
defferent because of the trigger and contraints, it won't cause any problem.
Am I right?
2. Say if I do want the check contraints and triggers happening on teh
subscriber server, then I will have to manually create them plus any
depending objects in the subscriber server. This is a manual process unless
I reinitialize and do a snap shot again. Am I right?
Another question too, is there a setting somewhere in replication in EM or
using sp_ stored procedure to replicate triggers or contraints?

Adding the date to a subscription report name

Does anyone have information on how I can add a file date to my named report when a subscription writes that file to a network folder? I am exporting as .pdf files. For example, today I have filename abc.pdf but I'd like it to be abc03312006.pdf. Likewise, tomorrow's file would be abc04012006.pdf.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

You have to go for reporting services programming and create a subscription programatically and pass the date as a value to subscription's description parameter like this.

service.CreateSubscription(reportpath, extSettings, description, eventType, matchData, parameters );

Can you please give more details on it? Where to go and how to do this?

Thanks,

-Rohit

Adding date to filename in report subscription

My company sends reports on a daily basis to our customers. Now I want to save all the sent reports on disc with the date in the filename. I have set up a subscription which daily saves the files where I want them. However, I haven't found a way to add the date easily. I already have a parameter when creating the report, it is called Date. Does anybody know if I can use a parameter or something else?

Thank's

Hello,

Sorry, I don't believe there is a way to modify the filename from a subscription, but you can specify a filename from a Data-Driven Subscription. Do a data-driven subscription to a file share, and just include an extra column in your subscription query to have something like this:

select 'Report or file name here ' + convert(varchar, getdate(), 101) as FileName, ...

Then, when you are setting the delivery extension settings, use this field as your File name.

Hope this helps.

Adding current date into attachment filename in reporting service

Hi there,

I have been using reporting service to generate my report and sending email with attachment report via subscription everyday. It is work well and no error.

My attachment file name is as same as reportname project. But customers asked me to add current date into an attachment filename which will help them to identify the report. I try to check in rsreportserver.config to change it but have no idea.

My reportname project is daily_file.rdl and my attachment filename in email is daily_file.csv. I'd like to change my attachment filename as day_month_year_file.csv.

Is there anyone know how to change an attachment filename to be not the same as reportname in reporting service 2005

Regards,

Hello...

I have the same question. My subscription generates a file that gets stored on our Network file server. A new file is created every day and the users want the generate date included in the name of the file that is created and saved. I see that this can be done in the e-mail subject line if your subscriptions email the users. How do you do it in the file name?

Thanks.

You can't do change the name on an export, but you can take a look at a couple posts on here about using a data-driven subscription to handle this.

Adding articles to existing subscription(s)

If I add an article to an existing publication that already has push
subscriptions, how can I get the new article to the subscriber databases
without running a full snapshot or reinitializing the subscription etc.?
I am running SQL Server 2K sp3 on Windows 2K/2K3.
Thank you.
For transactional replication, you just need to run the snapshot agent and
then synchronize (running the snapshot agent will only create a snapshot of
the new article).

Thank you for your answer. I have tried running the snapshot agent and I
get the following message:
A snapshot was not generated because no subscriptions needed initialization.
Maybe the question I should be asking is how to get the existing
subscriptions to realize that there is a new article and it should be part of
the subscription. The subscriptions report that not all articles are part of
the subscription after I add the new article.
Thanks.

Adding Article/Table!

Hello All,
I'm using Transactional Replication and it's Push subscription.
Can you plz give me the complete steps to add a single table w/o starting
snapshot for all tables.
And another question,
BOL says sp_refreshsubscription for Pull and
sp_reinitsubscription is for Push Subscription.
But I saw newgroup an it says BOL is wrong sp_refreshsubscription works for
both.
What is the difference b/w sp_refreshsubscription and
sp_reinitsubscription?
Thanks in advance.
Naveed.
I just tried to do this:
sp_addarticle 'pubs','jobs','jobs'
I then generated my snapshot - and restarted my distribution agent. Only the
jobs table went over in the new snapshot.

adding article in merge replication

Hi,
our configuration is SQL 2000 (publisher and subscribers as well), merge
replication, pull subscription.
From time to time we add new subscriber.
I need to add new table or stored procedure into current replication
schema. What to do exactly if I want to avoid reinit with total snapshot
transfer for existing subscriptions and any new subscription should be
created with new articles already?
Is following sequence correct?
EXEC sp_addmergearticle
@.publication = @.our_publication,
@.article = N'newarticle',
... @.force_invalidate_snapshot = 1
EXEC sp_refreshsubscriptions
@.publication = @.our_publication
Thanks for an answer or suggestion.
Lenka
Adding a new merge article to the publication will result in an entire
snapshot being created but NOT a reinitialization. Just the new article will
be transferred. Once the article has been added to the publication, you'll
need to also run the snapshot agent to have it propagated.

adding an enddate to a subscription

Hi,
I use web services to register a datadriven subscription. When i use this

"<January>False</January><February>False</February><March>False</March>" &

"<August>False</August><September>False</September><October>True</October>" &
"<November>False</November><December>False</December></MonthsOfYear></MonthlyRecurrence></ScheduleDefinition>
BUT,
when I add an <EndDate> element (right after the StartDateTime-element), the
subscription is still created, but my begin AND endtime are unknown.. anyone
an idea why this happens (and only when i add the enddate element) ?
Thx!Make sure you have SP2 installed and also there should be an EndDateSpecified
element that should be set to True when using the EndDate element.

<ScheduleDefinition>
<StartDateTime>2005-10-14T15:15:00</StartDateTime>
<MonthlyRecurrence> ... </MonthlyRecurrence>
<EndDate>2005-10-15</EndDate>
<EndDateSpecified>True</EndDateSpecified>
</ScheduleDefinition>
Note I have never tried using the EndDate so this *should* work but ... If
it doesn't work you could
create the ScheduleDefinition in code and then try using the XML serializer
to serialize the ScheduleDefinition object. Again
I have never done this but did come across this tip in one of the help files.
I have also heard that there are problems with EndDates esp. if you include
a time. You may want to search MS and other places for any topics on using
EndDates.

Adding an additional Subscription to Merge Replication

I have two servers in a merge replication setup (linked every night using an ISDN line). I wish to add a new subscriber to this but I am not sure if I need to do a new snapshot.
I was thinking of using the latest backup from the publisher and recover this on the new subscriber - if I do this will i need
to run the snapshot again ? or will they all simply carry on with the merge...
Thanks
Gerry
you have to create a no-sync subcription which will run the snapshot only
for necessary merge replication metadata.
