Additional Problems with Reporting Services
I am trying to use Reporting Services but is proving more difficult than I envisaged. Here's the problem, when I try to use management studio to change the Server type to a Report server, it is disabled. Hence I cannot change it. When I read msdn, it stated that this was caused by the fact that report services was not installed. However, when I look at SQL Configuration Manager, it shows that Report Services is running. Am I not understanding something? What am I doing wrong?I know that in computing, that you should not do the same thing over and expect to get different results! I may have now have to disagree with that tenet. Somehow, magically, I am now able to set up reports in Business Intelligence, but I am still unable to change my Server type when Management Studio is started. May I get a response from one of these czars or do I have to put my fate/faith in magic?|||
Don't know if I'm a czar, but I have an answer. :)
This is by design, Management Studio Express does not support connections to Reporting Service. In fact, it only supports connections to Relational Databases. You would need to have the full version of Management Studio from one of the paid Editions of SQL Server to support connections to other services.

Adding subfolders to to a project
Can subfolders be added to a project?
i want a few folder like : dashboards, full reports , management
reports etc.
in each folder i would like to store only the relevanr .rdl files and
images used in the reports.
but i dont see an option to add a folder when i right click on the
project name.
the only options i get when right clicking is new report or new
dataset.
i know folders can be added on the report server itself using the
manager but then i have to manually move all the files i wish to use in
the report and the report itself, and the next time i deploy the
reports, the updated files wont automaticaly be put in the folders.
any ideas?

In Visual Studio (2005), click on your Solution. CLick on File -> Add -> New
project
Choose Reporting Services project
Give your project a name, and make sure the location of it is in the same
folder as the solution. (You'll get a new folder in the solution folder for
your new project)
Click OK, and you now have a sub-project in your solution.
Save your solution to not loose the connections to the new project. (Click
on the Save All, not just Save)
You now have to create all the data sources in your new project. But they
are easy to copy, just copy from your main solution, and paste to the new
project. You have to paste to the project, not in the data sources folder,
as VS gets confused by this... You might have to check the credentials in
your data sources too, sometimes mine are blanked out when I do this.

adding new queries to Server Management Studio
When ever I hit the CTRL+N to add a new query and then save it, why doesn't it get added to the current project I'm working on? Since it's not added, I have to open Windows Explorer, navigate to the right folder, then drag'n'drop it into the right project in my solution. A lot of work for something it should be doing by default.
What am I missing? Thanks.

Adding logins via SSEUtil compared to SQL Server Management Studio
Hello all,
I am currently in the process of setting up an SQL Server Express installation that comes packaged with an application I have written. My problem is that I want to use SQL Server user management (not just windows users) which work fine if I set them up manually. I started writing a script that I have SSEUtil execute once the application is fully installed (a step in my installation script) which sets up the users and passwords etc. The script is similar to the following:

Now if I run this script from within SQL Server Management Studio it executes perfectly. The logins add, the role is added, each user is added to the database logins and assigned to the role, the schema is set correctly on each user.
Then when I try to run the exact same script from the SSEUtil application (SSEUTIL -s PCNAME\Instance -run USERS.SQL), it processes everything, except the Logins.
This is frustrating as it means to install for a client I would need to either get them to open the management console and run the script from there, or I have to go to site just to setup users.
Am I on the right track? Or is there another way to automate the adding of Logins?

Just an update.
I did a check within my database and found that the sys.syslogins has the users (when I do a select from the view) but they just don't work. The only difference I can see between my scripted login I created and the SA user is the flag for sysadmin, but thats understandable as these users are not to be sysadmins.
Is there another table that actually enables the login?

|||I noticed a lot of people using the SQLCMD.EXE instead of the SSEUtil.EXE I was using so I thought I'd give it a try.
Lo and behold... it works!
Talk about crazy... oh well. Just so everyone knows, use the SQLCMD.EXE over SSEUtil.exe... gah!
EDIT: I didn't mention the command line to run it...
SQLCMD.EXE -i MYSCRIPT.SQL

Sorry to have missed this thread earlier, I can shed some light on what you're seeing.
SSEUtil.exe is an unsupported tool primarily used for troubleshooting User Instance problems, it is not meant to be used as a general solution for runing scripts, nor is it licensed to be deployed with your application. Additionally, the default mechanism of SSEUtil works against the User Instance, not the parent instance, so my guess is it was not working the way you think it was.
SQLCmd is the general scripting utility that is installed with all copies of SQL 2005 and is exactly the tool you should be using for what you wish to accomplish, but you've already discovered that.

I found the SSEUtil app with a search on attaching the database to my SQL Server so I guessed it would have worked running scripts against it also. I just noticed that the SSEUtil doesn't attach my database correctly either so I've now transferred over to using another SQL script.

Adding images with SQL Server Express Management Studio
Can I add images to a table with SQL Server Express Management Studio? If so, how, if not, what alternative methods other than the point-and-click can I use?

there's no "point and click" solution for your requirement in SSMS... but you can "load" a column executing the appropriate Transact-SQL statement..

Adding Identity column to existing table.
I am trying to add a server managed ranged Identity column to an existing
table in my database and then have SQL Server provide the management of
subscribers ranges.
I have had success with this using a test database (a book walk-though
example) but now I want to add this to a real table in my production
environment (actually a copy of the database) and then test with several
Pocket PC Sql Server CE subscribers using merge replication.
I added a column named MyIdentity as a 'int' type and choose the 'Not for
Replication' option.
I have it set up with horizonal filtering using suser_sname() which is
correct giving each subscriber only the appropriate records.
The problem is that under 'Articles', 'Identity Ranges', the settings are
disabled as if they are not an option with the article I added the
MyIdentity column to.
Any ideas as to how to get this working. Your help is greatly appreciated.

when you create the publication there is a checkbox which gives the option
to 'automatically assign and maintain a unique identity range for each
subscription'. If this is not checked when you create the subscription then
it is assumed you will manually set the ranges and the option is then greyed
out. Please can you recreate the publication to check this is the case.
BTW setting it manually can also be useful (see
http://www.mssqlserver.com/replicati...h_identity.asp).

Thanks, I think maybe I understand what was wrong earier. I tried your
suggestion but there was no tab on the article properties dialog as I was
creating the publication. Finally I added in a column as 'int' with the
Replicated set to "Yes". Then when I created the publication, the tab was
there and allowed me to choose for the server to manage the ranges.
If I understand correctly (I'm quite new to SQL Server), each table in a
merge replication solution in which the subscribers will be adding records
will need a single "int" column with the replication set to "Yes" prior to
creating the publication. Then during the creation of the publication, I
need to make sure and check for each of these tables (articles) ranges to be
managed. Is this correct and am I missing anything in this statement?

for merge you need the column specified as Yes Not For Replication on the
publisher. When creating the publication there is the checkbox to have SQL
Server manage identity ranges we talked about. On the subscriber there
should be the same Identity Yes Not For Replication attribute. This allows
the replication process to do identity inserts. The ranges avoid clashes. If
you are not going to have SQL Server manage the ranges then you can manually
do it yourself. This is required if you are doing a nosync subscription ie
the subscriber already has the data so the initialization process won't send
it down. There are details on Michael Hotek's site of nice algorithms to
avoid identity clashes (http://www.mssqlserver.com/replication/).

It's when I add an article I needed to go into this article's properties to set it before generating the snapshot.

Adding a Windows Authentication Login to the server from third-party softwareHi,
I have an application in development into which I want to port some simple user management functionality. I have no problem getting lists of users/database roles/etc. and assigning users to roles as seeing fit, but one last function I cannot perform: replicating the "select windows user" dialog in the domain context of the server so that I have a user to add.
Is this possible with smo? or should I just give up on this angle and just attempt to use ActiveDirectory objects on the client machine and hope that the domain context is the same between the client and the sql server?Hi,

Adding a user to a database in SQL Server Management Studio Express?
Can someone provide me with instructions or a link on how to add a user to a database using SQL Server Management studio Express?
I also would like to know how you set the db_owner permission to the user?
My host has an sql express database and I would like to use the same connection string on my local machine, but need to set up the username/pw on the database locally.

go to the security tab of the management express
in the object explorer. double click logins to expand
right click and then add new user
from there you can grant the user access to database.
you can also open the database to add new user to it when you
already created a login in the security tab
